Burn-out is a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. It is characterized by three dimensions:
- feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion;
- increased mental distance from one’s job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one’s job; and
- reduced professional efficacy.
SIGNS OF BURNOUT
Self-neglect – A person who is stressed out at work is prone to self-destructive ideation.
Negative Emotions – Everyone is susceptible to feelings of pessimism and disillusionment from time to time.
Decreased Satisfaction Levels- Being exposed to prolonged periods of stress can lead to anhedonia-an inability to enjoy life in general.
Unexplained fatigue – Burnout leads to exhaustion which can be physical, mental as well as emotional.
Health Issues – Chronic stress can lead to multiple health related issues. These range from the innocuous looking headache and bowel irregularities to serious psychiatric diseases including depression, psychosis and suicidal ideation.
