Do nail polish cause cancer?

I have heard that many nail polishes contain formaldehyde and can cause cancer. Is it safe to use it?

Nail polishes are mostly made of nitro cellulose. Many nail paints have high toxic compounds, such as phthalates, toluene and formaldehyde, which are associated with an increased risk of cancer. Individuals working in the nail salon industry may have a higher risk of cancer due to their exposure.

Does that mean you have to stop using nail paints altogether?

Well, something used with caution and care will reduce the risk involved. You may start by checking the labels to make sure the product is free of toxic chemicals. Formaldehyde-free nail polishes are available. Having said that, a lot of nail makeup cosmetics do contain these chemicals, although they might not claim them on their labels!
